QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE
"Sick, Sick, Sick"

Windows | Mac

The rock juggernaut that is QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE is back with Era Vulgaris, the band's 5th full-length album of blistering desert rock. Asked by a fan how he'd describe the new album, founder and leader Josh Homme replied, "dark, hard and electrical, sort of like a construction worker." That's certainly borne out by hard-charging tracks like "Run, Pig, Run" and the first single, "Sick, Sick, Sick." Look for the band on tour throughout this year and into next.

VHS OR BETA
"Can't Believe A Single Word"

Windows | Mac

It's been three years since their debut, Night On Fire, but Louisville, Kentucky's VHS OR BETA are finally back with the superb Bring On The Comets. Though not as overtly dancey as its predecessor, the album more than makes up for it with killer hooks, some of which (like this track, the first single) remind us of mid-period XTC. Factor in inspired performances from singer-guitarist Craig Pfunder and crew, and you've got a winner. Look for the band on tour this fall with fellow Quiksilver faves Moving Units.

MOVING UNITS
"Pink Thoughts"

Windows | Mac

On October 9th, LA-based MOVING UNITS released Hexes For Exes, their sophomore album and the long-awaited follow up to 2004's buzzworthy Dangerous Dreams. On the new disc drummer Chris Hathwell, singer-guitarist Blake Miller and bassist Johan Boegli don't disappoint, offering song after song of dark, angular guitar rock that pays homage to obscure goth pioneers (Miller's beloved Christian Death, for example) while steadfastly looking forward. See the band on tour this fall with fellow Quiksilver faves VHS Or Beta.

PANTHERS
"Goblin City"

Windows | Mac

Recorded in 2006 by renowned producer and engineer Steve Revitte (Liars, Beastie Boys, Black Dice), The Trick is the third full length offering from Brooklyn-based PANTHERS, and their second on Vice. Comprised of vocalist Jayson Green, bassist Geoff Garlock, drummer Jeff Salane (all formerly of Orchid), and guitarist Justin Chearno (Turing Machine, Pitchblende), it's obvious that their long and storied pedigree has paid off with the experience and depth presented on The Trick's ten tracks of calculated abandon.

RADIO 4
"Enemies Like This"

Windows | Mac

It only takes a few seconds of "Enemies Like This," the title track to RADIO 4's most recent album, to realize that the Brooklyn-based band has returned with all cylinders fired up and a rejuvenated sense of purpose. Enemies Like This is the album long awaited by all those who know that, up to now, Radio 4's strongest impression has been made from the stage. The band recently performed at the Young Guns III premiere at Quiksilver HQ in Huntington Beach. Anyone who was there can attest to their live prowess.

EAGLES OF DEATH METAL
"Don't Speak (I Came To Make A Bang)"

Windows | Mac

Death By Sexy, the most recent album from EAGLES OF DEATH METAL, was produced by drummer (and Queens of the Stone Age front man) Joshua Homme, and it sounds exactly the way God intended live rock n roll to sound: Raw, Sleazy & Spiffy. It was completed in just 12 days and is more hook laden than your old job at the bait shop. Dig it.

NADA SURF

"See These Bones"

Windows | Mac

Lucky is NADA SURF's fifth record and their third for Seattle's Barsuk imprint. The record is filled with songs of restlessness, longing and the elusiveness of love. Yet, in its inimitable way, the band beautifully counterbalances its signature lyrical wistfulness with its singular musical buoyancy. Intimate tunes become we're-all-in-this-together anthems, thanks to the chiming guitars, propulsive beats, and the ever-present yearning in singer Matthew Caws' voice.

THE WHITSUNDAYS

"Loralee"

Windows | Mac

It could just as easily be 1967. But no matter the year, Edmonton, Alberta's THE WHITSUNDAYS certainly have a knack for writing yellowed, reverb-wrapped pop music, borrowing from the grand tradition of English psychedelia, garage, and vintage organ rock. Main Whit Paul Arnusch is more used to pounding out labyrinthine experiments behind the kit for Faunts and 80's-minded melodramatists Floor, but his pop sensibilities shine through on the Whitsundays' self-titled debut album.

Canadian singer-songwriter (and member of Broken Social Scene) JASON COLLETT's new album, Here's To Being Here, captures the essence of his live performances and features the energy and musicianship of his touring band. Says Collett, "Recording in bigger spaces and live off the floor was the ideal I wanted to shoot for with this record. Recording this way allowed for spontaneous creations, which led to many wonderful little accidents."

ST/MIC

"Dedicate"

Windows | Mac

A bonafide musical prodigy, ST/MIC taught himself bass at 9, guitar at 11 and drums at 14. Though he spent the latter part of the 90s touring under the name St. Michael, playing a mixture of turntable-infused hip-hop, jungle and drum & bass, he's since retreated to his Virginia studio to focus on production. The result is the aptly titled Life's Work, the kind of album that only comes after years spent in the game.
